Hortobágy – the name, which is quite familiar amongst foreign travellers of Hungary can be a bit confusing. As Hortobágy is a National Park which can be found on the Great Plain (Alföld) in Hungary, but at the same time it is also the name of a beautiful small village of this area.
Hortobágy, the National Park with its area over 800 km² is the largest protected area in Hungary and the largest natural grassland in Europe. It is very similar to a steppe, You can see here cattle, sheep, oxen and horses, tended by herdsmen. One of the most unique curiosities of the Hortobágy is its bird-life. Visitors can wonder the flocks of migrating birds such as geese, cranes and shore birds and the great number of valuable species nesting here, such as bustards, sakers or short-toed larks. There are four areas for the tourist: Nyírőlapos-Nyárijárás Puszta, the Hortobágy Fish Lake (halastó), the swamps of Egyek-Pusztakócs (mocsarak) and Tisza Lake.
Tourists mainly look for the traditional pastoral life which remainded in the form of folklore and tourist attraction such as breeding of horses or fish – farming.
