The small town of Esztergom is located on the Danube bank in Hungary about 50 km north – west of Budapest, the capital city. It lies in Komárom – Esztergom county. The Mária Valéria Bridge connects Esztergom with the town on the other side of the river, Štúrovo which is actually already in Slovakia. Esztergom was the capital of Hungary from the 10th till the mid-13th century and it was the Royal Seat until King Béla IV of Hungary. Esztergom is the seat of the prímás of the Roman Catholic Church in Hungary. The city has the Keresztény Museum (Christian Museum), the largest ecclesiastical collection in Hungary. Its breathtaking cathedral, the Basilica is the largest church in Hungary… but we guess in the whole region.
Several daily trains connect Esztergom with Budapest Nyugati Pályaudvar (Western Railway Station). By train, it takes 1½ hours to get there. There are also many buses, some of them run via Visegrád and Szentendre. From Štúrovo to Esztergom it is possible to walk through the Danube river across the Mária Valéria Bridge. It takes 20 – 30 minutes. In summer, it's also possible to go to Budapest by boat.
